first edition. Notable for its illustrations, Bourne's "Picture" is a grim one depicting slaves in numerous situations of humiliation and torture. Also important are Bourne's strong captions: "Selling Females by the Pound," "Family Amalgamation among the Men-Stealers," "Flogging American Women," "Tanning Boys," and "Ladies Whipping Girls."
